What is the Cost of an Orangery?

If you’ve already decided to add an orangery to your home, you’ll need to think carefully about the design of your new room. The materials you choose – and the company you instruct to complete the installation – will influence the cost of your home improvement project. Can your plans be realistically implemented based on your budget? Equally, is there room to be a little more ambitious and upgrade some of your choices?

Here are a few things to think about when planning your new orangery, with the view to limiting the cost of your project.

What Materials Will You Use to Build your Orangery?

How you construct your orangery will affect its price. For example, brick is more expensive than glass. A traditional orangery uses more masonry than glazing, so you’ll need to extend your budget if you’ve decided to opt for a traditional brick-built orangery. There are however plenty of alternatives to brick which you can discuss with your installer or builder to reduce the cost of your orangery.

uPVC is less expensive than wood or aluminium; it can replicate the authentic look of timber but won’t warp or rot like wood over time. That said, aluminium is stronger and slimmer for uninterrupted sightlines and is great for large spans of bi-fold or sliding doors. The best thing about using uPVC or Aluminium to build your orangery is the choice of colour and the lack of ongoing maintenance required.

To achieve optimal thermal performance – and depending on the design of your orangery – you’ll need to compare these to get a cost for your orangery:

    • Brick Piers and Super Insulated Columns. Our contemporary and classic orangeries can feature either of these. Stylistically, either of these choices is outstanding. The key difference is that our super insulated columns can deliver thermal performance up to five times higher than a brick pier of the same size. These types of building are very similarly priced, but the Super Insulated Columns are faster to install, so they could reduce the cost of the orangery installation.
    • Standard Glass versus Performance Glass. Performance glass can have a big impact on the comfort if your new orangery. You can specify performance glass with a number of characteristics like solar glare reduction, thermal efficiency, UV protection, self-cleaning, noise reduction, etc. Performance glass can add to the cost of your orangery, but is worth it, particularly if you have a sunny or shady spot.

Choosing the Right Installer

Selecting a trusted installer is vital. Will your chosen installer be using authentic Ultraframe products? Do they have the experience and knowledge needed to get the installation right the first time around? If the answer to either of these questions is no, it could cost you time and money further down the line.

Time is money. The longer your installer spends on-site building your orangery, the higher the cost of your project. Ultraframe products are pre-fabricated at our dedicated factory. This dramatically cuts down on installation time – resulting in less intrusion, less messy cutting on site, and a faster route to completion.
